The Midnight Message That Reminded Me: Hosting Never Sleeps

Real stories. Smarter hosting.

Hosting never sleeps — and at 12:19 AM, an Airbnb notification proved it.

“There’s no water at the property.”

Not exactly the message you hope to receive just after midnight.

Within a minute, we replied.

“Just give me 5 minutes, checking.”

The guest didn’t know what was happening behind the scenes.

They only knew one thing:

There was no water.

The clock starts ticking

When a guest reports a problem, every minute feels longer than it actually is.

The goal isn’t just to fix the issue.

The goal is to reassure the guest that someone is already working on it.

So the first thing we did was respond immediately.

Even before we knew the solution.

That simple message bought us a little time—and hopefully gave the guest confidence that they weren’t being ignored.

Looking for answers

We started checking every possible option.

Phone calls.

Messages.

Anything that could help us understand what had happened.

After a few minutes, it became clear that solving this remotely wasn’t going to be enough.

There was only one thing left to do.

A 1 AM drive

It was around 1:00 AM when we left for the property.

The roads were almost empty.

The only thing on our minds was getting the water running again before the guests lost any more sleep.

Thankfully, the issue was straightforward once we reached the property. The water supply was restored, and everything was back to normal.

At 12:53 AM, we sent the message every host hopes to send:

“The water is back.”

Sometimes, that’s all a guest needs to hear.

No apology, no explanation — just proof that someone was already on it.

What guests never see

Guests remember whether their stay was comfortable.

Hosts remember everything it took to keep it that way.

📞 The late-night phone calls.

🚗 The unexpected drive.

⚡ The quick decisions.

😊 The relief when the problem is finally solved.

These moments don’t appear in listing photos.

They don’t show up in five-star reviews.

But they’re part of hosting all the same.

What this experience taught us

That night reminded us of something important.

Hosting isn’t a nine-to-five job.

Hosting never sleeps — not really, not when someone is trusting you with their stay.

When guests choose your property, they’re trusting you with their stay—whether it’s noon or midnight.

You can’t prevent every unexpected situation.

But you can decide how quickly you respond, how calmly you communicate, and how committed you are to finding a solution.

Those things matter just as much as the apartment itself. It’s part of why we keep refining our own Resources page — the checklists and systems that make a 1 AM drive less likely in the first place.

The other side of every 5-star stay

Most guests will never know what happened behind the scenes that night.

And that’s okay.

Our job isn’t to make guests appreciate the effort.

Our job is to make sure they can get back to enjoying their stay. (Airbnb’s own hosting resources talk about response times for exactly this reason.)

Because behind every smooth check-in, every comfortable night, and every five-star review…

…there’s a host who answered the phone when everyone else was asleep.
